Thanks to all the runners and outstanding volunteers from RAFB who came out in the low temperatures to support the 2011 Museum of Aviation Foundation Marathon/Half-Marathon and 5K Run/Walk. At least it was sunny and dry this year, and the wind was relatively calm. Over 1200 people registered for the three races, which was a new record. Records were also set for marathon finishers (202) and Half-Marathon finishers (475). 420 people finished the 5K, for a grand total of 1097 runners competing.

Alabama runner Roger Keel's streak of 14 consecutive Museum of Aviation marathons ended this year when he made a last minute switch to the 5K. However, he is still the only person we know of who has competed every year since we started in 1997!

Leesburg, Virginia runner Dana Casanave made our marathon the last race in her quest to run 52 marathons in 52 weeks. She began this project on January 24, 2010 and dedicated each marathon to a different child in South Africa who has been affected by the AIDS epidemic. Most of the children are orphans and many are HIV+ themselves. Dana not only met her goal of 52 in 52, but far exceeded it by running 54 marathons in only 51 weeks. For more information about the charity Dana supports and her travels for the past year, see her amazing weblog at www.52beginnings.com.
